Linden Prize Finalist
The Space Between These Trees
AM Radio
The Space Between These Trees, by AM Radio, consists of several Second Life spaces, including The Far Away. Each space is an art installation, focused on non-urban experiences, emphasizing wide open space themes. In an ever congested real life, users find these spaces compelling, relaxing, and a trues escape from the stress of everyday life. The spaces invite and encourage dialog about the experience of both virtual and congested real spaces, raising awareness about how we use our Earth, treat one another, and how we want Second life and virtual worlds to develop as a positive and influential tool which improves the human condition, even for those beyond the access of virtual worlds.
Each space encourages donations. For a donation, the user can make a selection from an array of items. The item selection is dominated by the offering of plots of wheat which gives the user a 20 meter by 20 meter plot of wheat. The wheat may be copied so that the user can create fields of wheat to beautify their second land with open space while creating a compelling and rich experience of their own. The donation is sent to Heifer International charity. Each virtual plot of wheat represents the gift and prosperity of agriculture for those in need in real life. Each visitor to the spaces is given the opportunity to participate in mankind's most fundamental industry via the purchase of virtual wheat.
Heifer International is dedicated to fighting hunger and protecting the Earth. Heifer works with families around the globe, providing appropriate livestock and training. Heifer provides tools and knowledge which allows individuals to become effective members of their community, thereby strengthening the entire community and making a true impact on society as a whole.
Each Linden dollar has a measurable and sustaining impact on the real world. The Space Between These Trees set an initial goal of 500 dollars USD in 2007. The initiative has since raised 7500 USD, with a current goal of 10000 dollars. In just 16 months the goal has increased 2000%. The Space Between These Trees has purchased the equivalent of 15 cows, 30 water buffalo, 62 goats, 125 pigs, or approximately 12 thousand chickens.
The Space Between These Trees relies heavily on the giving of Second Life Sim owners to host art spaces which raise money for Heifer International. AM Radio should be considered for the Linden Prize because the prize will be used to continue to grow AM Radio's charity work via the purchase and maintenance of art spaces dedicated to raising money for charity. The prize will be used for the creation of distinctive, original art work which demonstrates and continues to push the limits of experience and aesthetic in Second Life, while encouraging, inspiring, and providing ways in which users can impact the real world in a meaningful, and positive way. AM Radio's use of the prize will have a measurable impact on the real world, allowing AM Radio to raise charity goals, improve the Second Life experience, share with visitors the possibilities of virtual spaces, while pushing the boundaries of compelling and rich experiences of Second Life which bound head first into the ! real world, helping to solve problems, important problems, that affect us all.
